i'm from the valley here... I attended this year's convention for the first time (my first) and found it really informative to a novice musician in the biz. I don't really know what the biz is like... its more of an amorphous blob in my perspective.

I found out that its a lot easier than I thought - in concept. I don't know where to start talking about it., but it seems as though there's more reaching people through networks to be done than the music itself.

because once you have a handle on your tunes, its time to deliver the goods... otherwise through it into the electric pond of the internet.

I know every musician needs relies on his/her friends for the home base of support and egging on - beyond that, i suppose it depends on if your music is any good.

wonder if this is a conversation killer or not...

i'll go through my notes if anybody has a focal point, seeing as how i'm all spun up in my lack of los angeles experience.

This isn't an attempt at self-aggrandizement, although positive comments are appreciated. It's meant simply to put myself out there for people to suggest things I hadn't thought of and maybe to learn something themselves. So here goes:

Last night, I practiced using Ableton to beat-match a rhythm I had created about 3 nights ago with music I was hearing on XM's The System. I was getting pretty good at it within about 5-10 minutes and was able to adjust the BPM whenever the tune changed BPM, which seemed to happen pretty frequently on this tune. I don't remember the name, though.

Speaking of the rhythm I created, I put together a really simple combo of bass drum and lo-tom, along with an off-beat on cymbal and cow-bell and yet another off-beat on open hi-hat. I did it by drawing some beats using the pencil and using intuition about where they should go. I moved and deleted stuff to make it sound better as I listened. The result is actually kind of cool and sounds like it could be used in a funky house tune. If I can figure out a way to show here the picture I see in Ableton, I'll do it.

Hey, all - this is Spike - the guy who started this tribe.

This tribe is less than a day old and we have our first 2 members -so welcome to ren-ren and Kumar! And there was an inquiry from "Davey" - maybe he'll join up with us soon. (I have since changed the listing and hope that the site address is displayed more clearly.)

Kumar tells me that his "aspiration is to become a world-class DJ". Now - *I* don't dance too often, and maybe other folks out there don't either - but you simply MUST hear the free tracks at GoHomeProductions.com - he has carved out a new niche in mixing - combining two familiar songs - it sounds weird but it works and it is amazing. Who would have thought that Jim Morrison singing "Riders On The Storm" would fit so perfectly over Blondie's "Rapture"?

Kumar - I have a few ideas for you if you like what you here there. I dont have the patience or understanding of my program to make similar mixes - but maybe you do. I'll discuss these ideas later if you ask me. heeheehee ;)

So - Kumar - Yu have just started using the music program "Ableton Live"? I have just scratched the surface of what my "Acid" program can do. Did you compare the two or know others who use Acid? As well, Acid allows the joining of audio clips and MIDI samples. You can use pre-made loops, or tweak them or make your own, change keys, balance, volume, etc.

I plan to use Acid to replace my "traditional" tape recorder, and record using my voice and instruments - though I need to learn to really come up with some wild loops of my own to add in.

I believe Acid also has midi capabilities, by the way, and also allows you to make synchronized "music videos" in the program itself. Do any DJs use videos as well?

Who is DJ Sasha? I suppose if I were big into dance music I'd know who he or she is?

You say you have been practicing making remixes and loops of classic rock (Whole Lotta Love, e.g.) and house/trance music? Very cool! Then I have to ask you to consider including THE best version of "Whole Lotta Love" (and then, of course, I wanna HEAR it!) and that is the version by The Bobs. It's truly awesome. It's 5 voices. No overdubs. No instruments. I can send yu an MP3 if yu like.

I'm glad that yu have a healthy appetite for "classic rock" but, unfortunately, that denotes the same 100 songs over an over and over again!!!! Like you said, "FM" is short for "for masochists"!!!! haha!!!

I like about 80 years of music, and am always discovering more. (OH - sorry - I forgot! Isnt it supposed to be that I'm supposed to only like music that I have heard since I started listening to music, like when I was about 15? And anything my parents like has GOT to be totally bad and unlistenable???? hee-hee)

Yu have XM? Great! Any places for new local music? The TRUE independents? If you get some links, please do let us know! Please keep us posted if yu hear any of that "really cool new music that you just don't hear on commercial radio stations" that you could recomend!!!

I'm very glad that yu describe what yu wanna do as a DJ as combining "classic rock, non-American sounds and weirdo experimental electronic stuff!"

I, too, don't like the term "World Music" as it generally conjures up notions of a homogenous sound when its anything but the truth. It makes it seem like it's going to either be Salsa with deep traditional roots, or some field-recordings of natives chanting and banging drums, and by golly, if you are conscientcious of the world, you'll like it! Like David Byrne said, the CD bins are backwards - the section labeled "world music" is so small, but it is in actuality the great majority of music that comes from this planet! We just THINK that what they barf out of the radio onto us is the ONLY good music. That's the place we live in, and that's the music we're used to.

I hope that your "bit of a formal music background" doesnt hinder you in any way - haha - its just that, again, people with a short-sighted vision, telling us there was NO music, and NO way to communicate it before we had notation. And for the past 30 years we havent all been able to afford home recorders. I just dont want anyone to decide NOT to explore music because of the traditional methods putting them off someway or another.

Too much to talk about!
