DIY Music Convention

i'm from the valley here... I attended this year's convention for the first time (my first) and found it really informative to a novice musician in the biz. I don't really know what the biz is like... its more of an amorphous blob in my perspective.

I found out that its a lot easier than I thought - in concept. I don't know where to start talking about it., but it seems as though there's more reaching people through networks to be done than the music itself.

because once you have a handle on your tunes, its time to deliver the goods... otherwise through it into the electric pond of the internet.

I know every musician needs relies on his/her friends for the home base of support and egging on - beyond that, i suppose it depends on if your music is any good.

wonder if this is a conversation killer or not...

i'll go through my notes if anybody has a focal point, seeing as how i'm all spun up in my lack of los angeles experience.

    Hannah -

"wonder if this is a conversation killer or not... "???
On the contrary - I think it's a great conversation starter! It's been so quiet here since we started you could see tumbleweeds go by.

    "DIY Music Convention"???
Ive never HEARD of such a thing! I may like to attend the next one. Do tell us what you experienced there, and send links so we can all go next time, though the cynical side of me makes me think that there wasn't much as far as actual teaching (I hope I'm wrong) and instead many vendors asking for money! On another note - I'd love to teach a class on "5-minute guitar" there - as I play in an alternate tuning which allows me to write and play many songs - I dont really have the discipline for the more standardized approach, and take it from the perspective of a cartoonist (which is what I am) and an ENTERTAINER. And my method IS a very fast way to learn to play and write that is really easy.

    "i'm from the valley here..."
Cool! What part? I have lived in Tarzana, Granada Hills, Reseda and Northridge - currently im in the South Bay; Hawthorne. And there is NO creative community down here - in the valley I had MANY creative friends and many open-mic venues!

"I attended this year's convention for the first time (my first) and found it really informative to a novice musician in the biz. I don't really know what the biz is like... its more of an amorphous blob in my perspective."
Yeah - it's cool o talk about "being in the biz" - but there are many around the fringes, the edges, who are still just as valid, or more often MORE valid than the commercially available product out there.

"I found out that its a lot easier than I thought - in concept. I don't know where to start talking about it., but it seems as though there's more reaching people through networks to be done than the music itself."
The networking is exactly what I have to learn.

"because once you have a handle on your tunes, its time to deliver the goods... otherwise throw it into the electric pond of the internet. Well - there's plenty of sh*t on the radio and plenty of great music that never gets heard.
"Not everyone likes the Beatles, and not everyone likes Beethoven" I like to say.

"I'll go through my notes if anybody has a focal point, seeing as how i'm all spun up in my lack of los angeles experience."
Where are yu from? I mean 'the Los Angeles experience'??? What's that?

Would love to talk. I hope others pick up the ball as well.

this is woodland hills... really quiet at this hour. grew up here, myself. los angeles has been a homecoming for me and its really been isolating. i love how home can do that. happy spring, by the way.

too bad its kind of dead right now. i've never really found a vibe to ride on in greater los angeles area. its always so disconnected and ephemeral.

DIY - was really informative to me. could be lay person's info though. they talked about the industry as far as how to get involved contract wise, what it will do for you, what you have to do in order to be involved in it. contracts, legality, royalties, bmi, ascap, etc...

it was a soundboard for bitter - semi - successful - individuals who happen to be recording artists, although if i were in their shoes and got screwed, i'd probably be pissed too.

umm it seems as though the industry was painted as being a soul-less marketing driven machine out ony to make money on merchandising.

grain of truth in that i'm sure...

their angle, reiterated a lot, was how you can do it yourself. so the key elements were basically

      1 have good music
      2 own the rights
      3 have a website
      4 have a network
      5 tour
6 send it out to anyone and everyone
      7 have good music

the record industry won't pick you up unless you've already sold 5,000 to 10,000 copies. they're more for mass distribution for a major demand.

i mean, i saw how big they talked and thought how big i thought and, depending on how much of your ego is in charge and how much the music is - the rconcilliation of what you want personally and what the universe asks for seems to be the answer to doing it yourself

they made it known there are people you can pay to help you(publicists, network strategists and list compilers i.e. N.A.R.I.P.), stressed the importance of teaming up with other musicians to play multi act shows (i agree with that)

      the web site is www.diyconvention.com/

i went next door to the bar, the pig and the whistle. bartenter there was awesome, kept giving me free drinks. i fell asleep for the last panel of speakers...

      very informative though.

      what else...
